THEME: World Youth Day Edition

THOUGHTS:
World Youth Day
is just around the corner and Sydney is in a frenzy in anticipation of the Popes visit. Marshall Law ( tho’ thankfully not this guy) seems ones step closer to becoming a reality. It is now illegal to ‘wear annoying T shirts’ in Sydney, just in case it might upset his holiness. Upwards of $450 million tax dollars are being spent on the five day event, but I don’t think I’m allowed get annoyed about that.

So I thought it could be interesting to put together some songs about Jesus. Not necessarilly ‘Hurrah for Jesus’ or ‘I killed Jesus, and his Da’ songs either, but ones that were a little less obvious. I narrowed it down to this:

TRACKLIST:
01. Intro ( Talkin’ aloud? Then hallelujah! )
02. Chocolate Jesus  – Tom Waits
A big call starting this Podcast with Tom Waits following a whole edition dedicated to the man lst month, but with lyrics like:

When the weather gets rough
And it’s whiskey in the shade
It’s best to wrap your savior
Up in cellophane
He flows like the big muddy
But that’s ok
Pour him over ice cream
For a nice parfait

03. Personal Jesus – Johnny Cash
The only man who could cover this song. Brilliant!

04. Jesus don’t want me for a sunbeam – Nirvana
05. Jesus of the Moon – Nick cave & The Bad Seeds
06. Wooden Jesus – Temple of the Dog
I struggle with the opening lines of this song, but Chris Cornell’s voice is just so great I can forgive him this. Plus, they were kids when they made this album.

07. Jesus is my girlfriend – Baby Bird
08. Jesus just Left Chicago – ZZ Top

I’m constantly suprised that people don’t know that ZZ Top were a blues rock band. Their back catalogue is full of amazing blues fused rock gems.

09. Black Jesus – Everlast
10. Jesus loves me – CoCo Rosie
11. You think you’re Jesus – Vileneuve
12. Kooler than Jesus – My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult
13. Jesus doesn’t love me – Dragonette

Disclaimer:

The preceding podcast contained religious themes and is recommended listening for mature audiences. All characters are fictional, and any similarities with deities is purely coincidental. The views expressed in this podcast are not those of the pope, or anyone related to or attending world youth day. And that’s kind of the point.

THEME: Missing the Tom Waits Tour Edition

THOUGHTS:
A few months after I started doing Podcasts, I mentioned doing a Tom Waits edition to a friend. Pa, being the great friend that he is, said “Do it G, don’t forget that the podcast is about you. You’re playing the music that you love, that  you  are listening to now’. That was probably two years ago. So why now?

There has been a lot of d’internet action around the release of Scar Jo’s ( I feel dirty typing that) album of Tom Waits covers. It features David Bowie, and was produced by Dave Sitek. They buried her vocals at the bottom of a reverb well. And she still sounds awful. But she shur does look purdy. *sigh*

Garnering less attention was the announcement of Tom Waits upcoming Tour - Glitter & Doom. Tom held a ‘press conference’ ( genius) and will meander across central America before criss-crossing Europe to Dublin. And I couldn’t be further away. So I thought we’d all wallow in his genius and lament our absence.

Ladies and Gentlemen - I give you …Tom Waits!

TRACKLIST:
01. Intro
02. Eggs & Sausage
(In a Cadillac with Susan Michelson)
Waits recorded ‘Nighthawks at the Diner’ over two nights, July 30 and 31, 1975 in front of a live audience. The opening act was a stripper named Dewana - Waits and the band played bump and grind for her act.

03. Press conference
This probably doesn’t have the same impact as audio only, so you really should check out the YouTube.

04. New Coat of paint
“Fishing for a good time starts by throwing in your line”

05. Gun Street Girl
Rain Dogs
was released in 1985, when every other artist and band was using synthisizers and drum machines to produce their music. Waits enlisted Marc Ribot and banged a bathroom door with a two by four.

06. Downtown train
07. Step right up
‘The big print giveth and the small print taketh away’

08. Jockey full of bourbon
09. The piano has been drinking
10. Gods Away On Business
Taken from the 2002 album Blood Money, featuring songs written for the play Woyzeck, the third play Tom worked on with Robert Wilson.

11. All the world is green
One of the most beautiful songs ever written in my opinion.

12. Don’t go into that barn
Waits provides the beat box percussion ( you can hear his foot tapping as he sings) on this track,a song about the ghost of slavery. The lyrics are simply amazing:

‘Behind the porticoed house of a long dead farm
They found the fallen down timbers of a spooky old barn
Out there like a slave ship, upside down
Wrecked beneath the waves of grain
When the river is low they find old bones
When they plough they always dig up chains’

13. Dead and lovely
‘She thought she could stand up in the deep end’

14. I’ll shoot the moon
I saw ‘Black Rider’ with my beautiful girlfriend as part of the Sydney fesitval in 2006, and it was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. Visually spectacular, and sonically unlike anything you’re ever likely to hear.

15. Trampled Rose

Recorded on Akron in 2006, this track shows just what an amazing live performer Waits is, and why I’m so gutted I’ve yet to see him. You can get the rest of this show here
16. Missing my son

THEME:  Australian Electronica

THOUGHTS:

Midway through a recent _wednesday_weview, I decided that the May ‘08 edition of Borrowed Beats would be Australian Electronica themed. I know that this theme will draw different reactions from you all. When I told my beautiful girlfriend lastnight what the theme was, she groaned. Not because of the specific tracks selected, but because of the thought of Australian Electronica.

Elsewhere, the opinion is very different. American DJ’s can’t get enough of the Aussie sound, and Tiga stablemates have been blogging about it for weeks now.

TRACK LIST:

01 - With you forever - PNAU
PNAU’s self titiled third album is either hands in the air all out lunacy or cheese dipped crackers. With you forever is MOR for them, but a good opening track for me. This is what they had to say:
Peter: This track turned the corner for us. This was when we really started to get excited about the new album, it gave us the direction we were looking for… So many other tunes we were working on were ditched in light of this one. You can hear it’s got a lot of the flavours of the first record (Sambanova) we ever made. There’s timelessness to itNick: We fell in love with music again with this; I think this is our first great song. A lot of people encouraged us to do this album on the strength of this one song. Especially Ajax and the Bang Gang guys. And working with Luke Steele… it was amazing, that inspired us to work on a separate project with him all together. It’s another album we’re doing.02 - This boy’s in love - The Presets
03 - For the trees - Faux Pas
Faux Pas is a guy from Melbourne that I came across through a Gotye remix he did. I checked out his web page, then his blog and got inspired. And that’s when the triplejaysus blog was born. Tim was encouraging and said why not just do it. You should check out his gear.

04 - Hearts a mess - Gotye
05 - Spike - Infusion
Mad Racket
is a dance party held in a bowling club in Marrickville in Sydney, where I first saw Infusion back in ‘99. The whole thing was a revelation to this innocent boy down from the hills of rural Ireland. The experience has stayed with me!

06 - So Haunted -
Cut Copy
07 - A New Sky - The Presets
08 - Ice cream -
Muscles
I love Muscles music because it’s so dumb. Phat synth lines, stoopid lyrics and a great sense of fun. And you know what, fun music is okay with me.

09 - Sex city - Van She
10 - Better world - Infusion
11 - Don’t hold back -
The Potbelleez
I really struggled with this one - should I include it? Am I ‘going mainstream’? (smiley  face) But the way I figure it, if I’m doing an Aussie Electro edition, I have to give a cross section. And I quite liked it for the first 4 months…

12 - Out there on the ice - Cut Copy
13 - Love and imitation - Infusion
Another bit of self indulgence to close with a thumping track from Pocket and the boys. You should check out the infusion remix of ‘The walk’ by the Cure, the closeing track to the second ever borrowed beats!

THEME: D and B and C

THOUGHTS:When I listen to music I pay a great deal of attention, and I listen to a great deal of music. My girlfriend is sick and tired of me saying ‘But listen to this bit, hear how the guitars roar in’. For her music is either good or bad. ‘But the bassline is brilliant’ just doesn’t cut it for her. So in the August edition I wanted to highlight tracks with brilliant basslines, amazing drumming, or both. So, that’s the D and B. And just to mix things up a little, I thought I’d add ‘C’ - copy / cover version.

TRACK LIST:
01. Funked up Flavas - EZ Rollers

Personally, I think Drum ‘n Bass peaked around 1997. The genre was fresh and exciting. Roni Size won the Mercury award and Moving Shadow was releasing the best music around. EZ Rollers killed it with every release.

02. Exploration - Karminski Experience
This track has killer drums. The sitar and drone add beautifully to a track that has up to three simultaneous drum lines in places.

03. We Care A Lot - Faith No More Classic FNM with Chuck Mosely on vocals from 1987’s ‘Introduce Yourself’.

04. Roll Call - Random Heroes
05. Be there - UNKLE feat Ian Brown

06. 46 and two - Tool
Thinking Man’s rock - Tool are my favourite band. Without the Jung theories, or evolutionary hypothises, 46 and 2 is an amazing rock track. It is one of my favourite intro’s, right up there with ‘lust for’ life in my opinion.  (oOOOoooh - big call, G!)

07. He Doesn’t Love you - Sarah McCleod
(Hook & Sling Remix)
08. Somebody told me - Killers
(Josh Harris Club Remix) You really have to listen to these two together to spot the similarities, but once you twig it they get closer and closer in sound.

09. Elektric Boogie - Ursula 2000
All of Purple Rain in one track. Awesome!

10. Gin and Juice - The Gords (Snoop Dogg cover)
Gees up, hoes down.
Hoedown? Yeehaw!
No no, Hoes down- shorties, biaaches, freaks?
Oh. There aint no boot scootin’ neither?
No.

11. 7 minutes Seven inches - Noodles & Noel Disco (Featureing Dap Kings, Kenny Dope, Quantic Soul Orchestra..)

12. It’s been a long time - X Men

TOP TRACK: Exploration - Karminski Experience (07m31s)

THEME: Drink, Smoke and Dance

THOUGHTS: Introspection and reminiscing following my ‘turty tree and a turd’ birthday, back to the days when , if I wasn’t on the phone, I used to drink, I used to smoke and then I’d dance.

TRACK LIST:
01. Lay of the Land - Plej
Once again, opening bars were what was on my mind when I chose to use this track as the opening track rather than going straight to ‘Blue’. It sets the tone for the rest of the edition.

02. Blue - Plej
03. Numbers - Ammer & Console
04. That was just a dream - Cut Copy
05. ~~ - Cut Copy

Cut Copy’s entire debut album has phone references, whether it be dailing tones, subtle hints of call waiting or the ring ring on ~~.

06. Trust, Integrity and Pure Love - Torpedo Boyz
Torpedo boys prove that they need a little more than a beat and a MF bassline.

07. If you don’t get what you want - dEUS
I was asked why I included this track - sure, it has some fancy fret work, but it was argued that it wasn’t up to the usual triplejaysus standard. The honest answer it acted as a softener for the first inclusion of Tool.

08. The Pot - Tool
09. Wet your beak - Skeewiff
10. Drink, Smoke, Dance - Mr. Caine
11. Are you talking to me? - Torpedo Boyz

12. We interrupt this programme(Stanton Warriors Rmx) - Coburn.
13. Danger (you drop that bomb) - Tonite Only!

Australian duo ‘Tonite Only!’ give us their ‘Big Rooms Big Tunes’ stormer. It’s a little M.O.S., but I love it. It’s just a pity that I stuffed the mix in. I’ve gotten SO much better at that since July ‘06!
14. Damentag ( Madrid De Los Austrias mix) - Tosca

TOP TRACK: Trust integrity and pure love - (14m51s)

THEME: A Childs introduction to Jazz

THOUGHTS: Feeling good from the positive feedback I received from the May edition, I felt equiped to tackle a BIG theme. THE big theme. My enthusiasm for Jazz had been rekindled by a fellow muso Craig. He patiently schooled me, beginning with the more accessible and working from there. My ambitious goal was to do the same for my growing listenership. Knowing an hour of Jazz could sound like torture to many, I tried to spice things up with drum ‘n bass and modern jazz influenced r’n'b. Guitar, drums, keys and horns were all showcased. This remains one of my favourite editions. I remember commenting at the time to my beautiful girlfriend, if someone handed me this CD and said ‘Check it out’, two listens in I would have been hooked.

TRACK LIST:
01. Ease Back - Grant Green

Beautiful drumming, sublime horns and an exciting guitar build-up all make ‘Ease back’ an ideal opener for this ambitious edition.

02. Curtains aside - Tord Gustavsen Trio
03. Take Five - Dave Brubeck

This classic 1956 Jazz standard still sounds fresh today.

04. Riverwide - Joshua Redman
05. Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf! (Part 2)-Jimmy Smith
06. A Childs introduction to Jazz -  Nextmen
I endevour to take a tangential and whimsical look at the themes of each edition. Here I plot some of the genres jazz has infllenced.

07. KJZ (segment) - Photek
08. Retro (segment) - EZ Rollers
09. Mack the knife (Live) - Ella Fitzgerald

A wonderful version where Ella forgets the words and makes up her own on the fly. taken from ‘Room Service’

10. Hard Day’s Night - Steven Ramsey
Thsi version illustrates the precursor to dance music I think. It just makes you move!

11. Crazy Ritourelle - Gnarls Barkley Bootleg
12. One Night in Rio - Louie Austen

TOP TRACK: Mack the knife - Ella Fitzgerald  (45m01s)

THEME:I’m Happy to be alive, because I’m on a secret mission.

THOUGHTS: Immediate feedback from the April edition was it was WAY too heavy. ‘I prefferred the first one’ most of my friends said when quizzed. But the plan was hatched. The podcasts would be themed. But what to do next? I had an idea I wanted to open with Sasumo Yakota, and had that Crapsian Claw track knocking around. After toying with ‘japanese james bond’, I settled on the above.

 TRACKLIST:
01. Symbol of life, love and aesthetic - Susumo Yokota
A killer track to open with, Symbol really grabs your attention.

02. Craspian Claw - Hedset
03. Drop - Cornelius

Drop was new to many listeners, and it fitted perfectly with the theme. It’s uplifting vibe was a great peak after the full on Hedset track.

04. Trompa - Santos
05. Mister Blue Sky - John Branning
Way dodgey track #3.

06. Hit the jack Vol 4 - Party Style (Bootleg)
07. Close to faith- George Michael Vs The Cure
The best bastard pop I’ve heard to date, instantly recognisable tracks blended perfectly.

08. Gold Muhna - Kayne West Vs The Muppets
09. Got me under Hip Hop - The Dead Pres Vs ZZ Top
10. Way with words - Statler & Warldorf
11. Lost due to incompetence - Skeewiff

TOP TRACK: Way with words - Statler & Waldorf (47m22s)

THEME: The Suicide Special

THOUGHTS:Midway through March I came up with the idea for themed podcasts. I s’pose prior to that I hadn’t given it much thought because there was such a steep learning curve involved in actually ‘going live’.  April proved a fateful month in rock n’ roll history, with deaths and suicides abound. I ran the risk of running you all off and compiled a track mark list that of dead artists I had…ahem…hanging around.

TRACKLIST:
01. Ain’t it a shame- Nirvana
A dog rough demo from Nirvana, I chose this track because it’s not obviously Nirvana.

02. Wake Up- Mad Season (feat Layne Staley)
Mad Season were a super-group made up of members of Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. The music was almost entirely about Laynes drug use, and this track was Layne predicting his own end. Fun stuff!

03. 20/04/04 - Eddie Vedder
Eddie wrote this track the day he heard that Layne had passed, and in it criticises the flood of imitators that tried to sound just like Layne.

04. Mary Anne with the shaky hand - The Who
05. Whole lotta Love - Led Zepplin (Dirty Funker remix)
06. Ride On - AC/DC

This version, taken from the Bon Fire box set has interviews with Bon Scott throughout, confirming what we all suspected. Rosie was from Tasmania!

07. Walk all over you - Mark Kozelec (AC/DC cover)
08. It ain’t hard to tell - Nas Vs The Doors (Unreleased Bootleg)
The Doors sample was not approved, making this bootleg really ‘rare’. (Can an Mp3 be rare?)

09. Mercedes Benz - The X Men
10. The Walk - The Cure (Infusion remix)

TOP TRACK: It ain’t hard to tell - Nas (The Doors unapproved sample) (37m.33s)

THEME: Scene setting debut

THOUGHTS:This is where it all began. I came up with the idea of a podcast after hearing the closing track of this podcast on triple j. I just felt an overwhelming need to share that track. I thought that my friends and family simply HAD to hear it. I announced during a boozy poker night that I was going to launch a web-page and put out a podcast.  Bourbon influenced the blog name too. I laughed for nearly ten minutes when I came up with triplejaysus!I really liked the idea of being present in the lives of family and friends despite the distance. Finally! Technology used for good!

TRACKLIST:

01. San Jose - Dione Warwick
Most people who know me probably expected me to open the first podcast with TOOL. I chose this track to open because I wanted people to take note and listen, that Borrowed Beats might be something a little different than they expected. maybe it would create a sense of anticipation - what’s gonna be next?

02. Keep Going - Bozoo Bajou (feat Tiny Joe White)
03. Hopscotch - Martin Brew
Local Bondi music producer, taken from the Bondi Calling series.

04. Still Here - Stanton Wariors (feat Eska)
My second favourite track on this edition, the Stanton Warriors haven’t topped this in my opinion.

05. All the love in the world - Nine Inch Nails
06. Minds Eye - Wolfmother
Another Sydney act, Wolfmother chanelled Black sabbath via Newtown.

07. Athiest Peace - Bad Religion
08. Come on! Feel the Illinoise - Sufjan Stevens
09. Tom Truberts Blues - Tom Waits (Recorded in Sydney 1979)
A cracking live version of Tom Truberts Blues, recorded in the State Theatre in Sydney by what was then Double J radio station!

10. Love and Happiness - Al Green (Bootleg)
See below:

TOP TRACK: Love & Happiness Bootleg - Al Green (46m.50s)
